V.S.O.P. #48 ANDEX S 3007 JIMMY ROWLES SEPTET: WEATHER IN A JAZZ VANE
Jimmy Rowles (piano), Bill Holman (baritone, tenor), Herb Geller (baritone, alto), Lee Katzman (trumpet), Bob Enevoldsen (valve trombone), Monty Budwig (bass), Mel Lewis (drums).
Recorded, December 13, 1958, at Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA.; Producer: Bill Holman; Engineer: Bones Howe; Liner Notes: Shelly Manne.
This is another of the great recordings Bill Holman produced for Andex (See V.S.O.P. #25 BIL HOLMAN: IN A JAZZ ORBIT; V.S.O.P. #19 THE BILL HOLMAN-MEL LEWIS QUINTET: JIVE FOR FIVE; V.S.O.P. #57 DEMPSEY WRIGHT: THE WRIGHT APPROACH and V.S.O.P.). The focus of this recording is Jimmy Rowles, not only as pianist, but also as arranger. Half of the arrangements are by Bill Holman and the other half are by Jimmy Rowles. Bill Holman and Herb Geller double on baritone in addition to their usual saxes and do a superb job of it. Lee Katzman and Bob Enevoldsen also provide memorable solos. This session was recorded at Radio Recorders and several out-takes are included to allow a comparison between the mono and stereo mixes used on this session.
