V.S.O.P. #49 MODE 100 HERBIE HARPER/6
Herbie Harper (trombone); Jay Core (tenor saxophone); Howard Roberts (guitar); Marty Paich (piano); Red Mitchell (bass); Frankie Capp or Mel Lewis (drums).
This recording was the first Mode release, and features Herbie Harper, one of the finest yet least well known trombone player in modern jazz. After touring with various orchestras, he settled down to a prolonged career in the recording studios and playing occasional jazz gigs. In the mid-fifties Herbie Harper made recordings for Nocturne, Tampa/Skylark, Liberty, Bethlehem, and this one for the newly formed Mode Record label. His lyrical style, tone control, and musicality reveal a rare and well developed talent that clearly deserves special recognition.
