V.S.O.P. #38 MODE 114 FLUTE FRATERNITY
Herbie Mann (flute, alto flute, clarinet, tenor), Buddy Collette (flute, alto flute, clarinet, tenor, alto sax), Jimmy Rowles (piano, celeste), Buddy Clark (bass), Mel Lewis (drums).
Recorded, July, 1957, at Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA.; Producer: Red Clyde; Engineer: Bones Howe; Cover Design: Eva Diana; Liner Notes: Joe Quinn.
Like many other Mode Records' sessions, this recording is unique and does not fall into any categories. It realy is the coming together of like-minded musicians having a great deal of fun showing off their virtuosity. On this date, the emphasis is on the flute and other reed instruments. Both Herbie Mann and Buddy Collette double on flute, alto flute, clarinet, and tenor. The set features four standards and four original compositions, of which two are composed by Herbie Mann. Jimmy Rowles provides both piano and celeste accompaniment, and Buddy Clark and Mel Lewis round out the rhythm section. The new stereo technology (new in 1957) allows each of the reed players to be miked in opposing channels so that the listener can easily recognize who is performing. The engineering by Bones Howe is excellent.
