V.S.O.P. #12 MODE 127 LEONARD FEATHER PRESENTS BOP JAZZ
George Wallington (piano), Phil Woods (alto), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet)*, Thad Jones (trumpet), Curley Russell (bass), Denzil Best (drums)*, Art Taylor (drums).
This classic 1957 New York recording date was produced by Leonard Feather. and dedicated to the compositions of Charlie Parker, Benny Harris, Dizzy Gillespie and other giants of be-bop. Recorded less than 2 years after Parker's death, this session features his saxophone, played by Phil Woods and his 5 year old son, Baird, singing the "Salt Peanuts" refrain on Dizzy's tune of the same name. This is more than a primer in be-bop. Leonard Feather, with the obvious assistance of Wallington and Woods have put together a hand picked crew of some of the finest players of the day to re-awaken the energy and spirit of be-bop.
