This compact disc features 23 selections recorded by Shelly Manne throughout the 1960's for Programs Inc. These recordings were incorporated into the U.S. Navy recruitment show, "The Navy Swings". Shelly Manne recorded over 9 sessions for Programs, Inc., more than any other jazz artist. This CD provides a great overview of Shelly's career during that period, as there are renditions of compositions from just about every album he recorded during the late 1950's and the 1960's. The performances on this CD are by three Shelly Manne groups: the Conte Candoli-Richie Kamuca-Russ Freeman version; the Frank Strozier-Conte Candoli-Mike Wofford version; and the Gary Barone-John Gross-Mike Wofford version. All three groups are excellent, and the quality of the original recording is quite good. None of this material has ever been released previously in any form. This is great music that will appeal to all straight-ahead jazz enthusiasts, collector and novice, alike.
