Ava Records was formed by dancer Fred Astaire, and originally called Choreo Records.  Due to a trademark problem, the name was changed to Ava.  Most of the recordings released on Ava/Choreo were produced by songwriter/accompanist Tommy Wolf and drummer Jackie Mills.  Tommy Wolf has authored many well known songs, notably "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most, written with Fran Landesman.  Jackie Mills was a big band jazz drummer who became a producer first for Ava and then for Mainstream Records.  The focus of Ava was different from the normal jazz label.  There was more interest in composing and arranging and in sound tracks than most jazz labels which made sense since the best selling releases were soundtracks or devoted to movie and TV themes.  Modern songwriting by Comden and Green and by Wolf and Landesman also was emphasized and showcased. Its' roster of artists included Fred Astaire, Harry Betts, Elmer Bernstein, Carol Lawrence, Pete Jolly, Dick Grove and the orchestras that played the movie themes on many of their recordings.
