     V.S.O.P. #32

 THE METROPOLITAN BOPERA HOUSE

    "STILL COMIN' ON UP"

This program was first released in 1986 on LP and featured live recordings
by the Metropolitan Bopera House, made during 1984 and 1985 when they were a regular

band at Eddie Condon's on 54th Street in New York City.  This quintet specialized
in bebop and hard bop material, often focusing on carefully selected compositions
and arrangements and were probably one of the first groups dedicated to reviving
this repertoire in an authentic manner.  In addition to the original LP program, this
digital release includes three never before released bonus tracks.

                                                                              THE STACY ROWLES QUINTET

                                                                               "LULLABY OF THE LEAVES"

In 1989, Stacy Rowles and David Angel played together fairly regularly and recorded this program in the company of Charlie Meyerson on guitar, Carl Rigoli on drums, and Bob Seravia or Louis Spears on bass. Stacy played fluegelhorn on most tracks, but switched to trumpet on a couple and vocalized on three selections.   David made most of his contribution on baritone sax, but switched to soprano for one selection. The interplay between them is particularly compelling. Stacy’s vocals are also quite moving. This was a fine group that performed well together and left this very worthwhile example of what they were all about.

V.S.O.P. #62

THE PILGRIM TRAVELERS

"LOOK UP!"

In late 1957, Bumps Blackwell had moved from Specialty Records to Keen Records, and brought with him, among others the famed Gospel quintet, The Pilgrim Travelers. This version of the group included J.W. Alexander, Jesse Whitaker, Lou Rawles, Ernest Booker and George McCurn. They recorded this album at Radio Recorders, in a number of sessions, one of which seems to have included Sam Cooke. A fine record by a legendary gospel groups.

V.S.O.P. #50

THE METROPOLITAN BOPERA HOUSE

'FORMIDABLE!"

The second Metropolitan Bopera House album released by V.S.O.P. RECORDS was a studio session recorded in October, 1986 in New York City. The group featured Danny D’Imperio, the leader, on drums, John Marshall on trumpet, Gary Pribek on alto, Tardo Hammer on piano and David Shapiro on bass. This program includes the original LP program, plus four bonus tracks. More relaxed than the M.B.H’s original live sessions from 1984, but still energized with the same excitement that marked the group’s earlier work.
